Two months after the conference Bibliographic metadata getting linked organized by the ISSN International Centre on April 28^th, 2016, AFNOR and the Bibliothèque nationale de France are convening a conference about Open data in libraries, archives and museums on June 24^th, 2016. EDINA and the ISSN International Centre have hosted a second international workshop as part of the Keepers Extra project. The event has been held on the 6th and 7th of June 2016, at the University of London Institute in Paris.

Organizational identifiers provide the means for a variety of stakeholders to find and identify an organization accurately and define relationships among its sub-units and with other organizations. This OCLC report focuses on organizational identifiers from the perspective of academic institutions, and outlines several scenarios where the International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) can be used to disambiguate organizations, including real-world examples.

ProQuest announces the launch of nine regional databases of locally published scholarly journals across all major disciplines. With over 3,000 academic titles across the nine databases, published by scholarly organizations and societies, educational institutions, and academic presses, each collection represents hundreds of the most authoritative scholarly publishing in that geographic area. These nine databases are part of a broader ProQuest commitment to supporting scholarly research and teaching by providing access to the best in local content across all the content types that researchers and students use and value the most.

One of the most remarkable advances in Brazil’s research communication is the growing adoption of the English language by Brazilian journals indexed internationally. Brazil stands out in the increase of English publishing among others countries which are publishing in their native languages. It is expected that this internationalization will contribute to increase the visibility and the impact of the research communicated.

The International Alliance of Research Library Associations (IARLA) – a global coalition of major research and academic library associations in Australia, Canada, Europe and the United States – recognizes the importance of working towards a common vision for open data. In setting out principles for open data, the Science International accord on Open Data in a Big Data World provides a practical road map for the implementation of open data at the global level. By signing this accord, IARLA declares their commitment to working with the scientific community in making publicly funded research data open by default.

SirsiDynix announces the one-millionth digital content download through eResource Central (eRC), an electronic resource management and discovery system that simplifies access to library resources by uniting physical and digital content into a single discovery interface. Digital content can be downloaded without re-directing to external vendor sites. Currently, eRC libraries have access to more than 9 million titles from 11 content providers with many more providers in the process of joining.

1Science and EBSCO Information Services announce their partnership to provide academic libraries access to a vast number of openly accessible scholarly articles when performing a search in EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). Through this agreement, 1Science and EBSCO allow clients and users to access to more than 15.5 million open access, scholarly papers, all directly in EDS, to facilitate the flow of knowledge.

COAR and UNESCO have published a joint statement about open access which outlines some of the concerns around the drive towards APCs. The statement is aimed at policy makers and underscores the need for a variety of OA models to be implemented around the world.

After exposing the many and varied arguments for open access (OA) monographs, the ticklish question of how OA monographs can make money is brought out. Three types of support are considered, together with the potential to reduce the cost of publication sufficiently to lessen the financial requirements of sustainability.

 

The University of Southern Queensland has delivered a beta search engine for open access journals, using spare capacity on AWS rather than on-campus supercomputers to crunch more than 16 million full-text records. A beta version of the search engine is now live, including traditional search results and a Google Books-style ngram interface.

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is strongly committed to Open Access and follows a progressive Open Access policy following the pioneering role of the Netherlands, with the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) becoming the first funding agency in the world to demand that the results of the research projects it funds be made available immediately and without restriction. The SNSF will continue to follow and play an active role in international developments. It supports the Amsterdam Call for Action on Open Science 2016, which aims to achieve full open access for all publicly funded scientific publications by 2020.

DOAJ removed approximately 3,300 journals for failure to submit a valid reapplication. The action of removal is another step in DOAJ’s two year long project to increase the value and accuracy of the information provided in it. Removed journals are welcome to submit a new application to DOAJ at any time. DOAJ will add a third tab to their spreadsheet “DOAJ: journals added and removed” that will list all of the journals removed.
