ISO standard 3297:2020 – ISSN has been slightly amended and a Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) ballot is now taking place to approve the 7^th version of the standard. This ballot will be closed by May 26, 2021. ​Thus, ISO TC46/SC9 members are kindly advised to quickly contact their ISO national member body to cast their vote.

ISSN Data and the associated suite of services have become an essential element in the identification of continuing resources worldwide: the ISSN Portal to freely and easily identify more than 2.5 million serials; ROAD to access Open Access scholarly resources curated by the ISSN Network; Keepers Registry to check which digital resources are archived by our 14 contributing agencies’; and Transfer Alerting Service to track journal transfer information. Since 1975, the ISSN has been the unique and persistent identifier for journals and other continuing publications. On a daily basis, it serves librarians, editors, publishers, content providers, database managers, scholars, students. The Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) has marked this year’s World Book and Copyright Day with a resolve to leverage on technology to increase the country’s literacy rate. Within the last four years, the authority have introduced some thoughtful initiatives which have helped in connecting Ghanaians to relevant knowledge.

Among these initiatives, applying for International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN), International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) and International Standard Music Numbers (ISMN) has been automated to give comfort to clients to apply for them electronically wherever they were in Ghana.

Science Europe, cOAlition S, OPERAS, and the French National Research Agency (ANR) present their Action Plan to further develop and expand a sustainable, community-driven Diamond OA scholarly communication ecosystem.

It proposes to align and develop common resources for the entire Diamond OA ecosystem, including journals and platforms, while respecting the cultural, multilingual, and disciplinary diversity that constitutes the strength of the sector.

The UNESCO Secretariat will support Member States in implementing the Recommendation on Open Science. This strategy was shown during an information meeting, on 28 April 2022. The recording of the meeting and the slides presented are available here. As part of this Implementation Strategy, UNESCO is convening five ad-hoc Working Groups focusing on key impact areas related to open science, bringing together experts and open science entities, organisations and institutions, according to their field of activity and expertise.

Recognising the role that preprints play as a way for life science researchers to openly and rapidly share their findings, Europe PMC has made over 420,000 preprint abstracts discoverable alongside journal publications. Europe PMC is expanding the number of searchable full text preprints to include those supported by Europe PMC funders. Overall this new project aims to increase the discoverability of science reported in preprints, expand the collection of full text preprints for future analyses, as well as improve visibility of preprints supported by Europe PMC funders.

In the Summer of 2022, cOAlition S will launch the Journal Comparison Service (JCS), a secure online platform that will help registered users from the research community better understand if the publishing fees they pay are commensurate with the services delivered, and to gain better insight into the elements of those services. Ahead of this date, publishers will be invited to register with the JCS, sign the participation agreement and share their 2021 price and service data through the platform.

Publisher applications will be accepted until the 31st October 2022.

UK universities have reached a three-year agreement with Elsevier providing both unlimited open access publishing and access to paywalled journal articles for a significant reduction on current institutional spend.

On September 15, 2021, the Latin American Association of Scientific Editors (ALAEC) was created, through the efforts of three national associations: the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors — ABEC Brasil; the Colombian Association of University Presses – ASEUC; and the Uruguayan Association of Academic Journals — AURA. ALAEC was officially launched during LATMÉTRICAS 2021: LATmetrics y el Simposio Latinoamericano sobre Estudios Métricos en Ciencia y Tecnología. ALAEC’s founding group – all the signatories of the Manifesto for the responsible use of metrics in research evaluation in Latin America and the Caribbean, — is working to consolidate the organization, through the establishment of a management group and the upcoming launch of the official website.

Springer Nature and Clarivate have agreed a process which will see the names of twenty one journals in Springer Nature’s German language medical portfolio change to become more clearly inclusive, while Clarivate will enable them to retain their indexing with no break in coverage and no disruption to their journal metrics in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). The new titles, coming into effect in June, will now focus on the specialist field it is publishing research in.

CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society specializing in scientific information solutions, announces the launch of a major expansion of the SciFinder Discovery Platform into life sciences. The CAS SciFinder Discovery Platform expansion unlocks human-indexed insights from journals and patents in over 50 languages dating back to 1957 and 70 million biosequences curated by CAS scientists. The result is a platform designed by scientists for scientists, which we see as a powerful component in drug discovery.

The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) – the global network of over 140 science, engineering and medical academies – announces the release of its new report, which is the culmination of a two-year study, Combatting Predatory Academic Journals and Conferences. The IAP report builds on current definitions and offers a spectrum of journal and conference practices: a broad set of dynamic predatory behaviours and characteristics that distinguish between outright fraud, low-quality, questionable and unethical practices, and best practice. On 16th February 2022, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) held a webinar on the ISNI standard as part of its ongoing Copyright Infrastructure series. This webinar focussed on the role that ISNI plays within the creative industries – including the library, music, research and publishing sectors, as well as copyright management – and included an introduction from WIPO, a presentation from representatives of ISNI and a Question and Answers session. The event was well attended with approximately 200 individuals.

CCC, a leader in advancing copyright, accelerating knowledge, and powering innovation, has acquired Ringgold, a longstanding provider of persistent organization identifiers widely used by the scholarly communications community. Ringgold is a recognized leader in PIDs for organizations and institutions. CCC has partnered with Ringgold for years and employs its identifiers to disambiguate author affiliations related to article processing charges in CCC’s RightsLink for Scientific Communications offering. Today, among its other services, Ringgold’s IdentifyDB identifier database contains more than 600,000 organization IDs and related metadata.

This preprint describes work in progress on ParaNames, a multilingual parallel name resource consisting of names for approximately 14 million entities. The included names span over 400 languages, and almost all entities are mapped to standardized entity types. Using Wikidata as a source, this is the largest resource of this type to-date. ParaNames is useful for multilingual language processing, both in defining tasks for name translation/transliteration and as supplementary data for tasks such as named entity recognition and linking.

The BIBFRAME Workshop in Europe is a forum for sharing knowledge about the practice of, production with, and planning of BIBFRAME implementation. It addresses to people working in the transition from MARC to Linked Data using the BIBFRAME model and related tools.
This is a hybrid event, either as an in-person two day workshop with broadcasting, being held on 20-21 September 2022; or as a virtual three day workshop, being held on 20-22 September 2022.

The call for proposals is now open, via the online submission form, before June 30, 2022.

Europeana 2022 will take place on 28 – 30 September 2022 and the call for proposals is announced. Like last year, 70% of the conference programme will be open to professionals working in and around the cultural heritage sector to share expertise, knowledge and experience in varied sessions.
