CLIR (Council on Library and Information Resources) Becomes Administrative Home for International Internet Preservation Consortium

Founded in 2003, the IIPC is an international organization of member institutions from more than 35 countries that work to collect, preserve, and make accessible knowledge from the global web. IIPC will remain independent, and its Steering Committee and Executive Board will continue to be responsible for setting the strategy, overseeing membership, tools development, and outreach, as well as the Consortium’s key events.

Endangered But Not Too Late: The State of Digital News Preservation

Funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Endangered But Not Too Late: The State of Digital News Preservation sounds a serious alarm about the looming crisis resulting from the pressures on an industry charged with delivering news coverage in a variety of digital formats. Based on interviews and consultations with approximately 40 newsrooms and related organizations, as well as with the Library of Congress and the Center for Research Libraries, the report documents an on-going loss of digital news content, our “first draft of history.” It also documents efforts being made to mitigate such losses in the face of ever-changing technology and the severe financial constraints affecting the news industry. La Biblioteca Nacional de España y la Agencia Estatal Boletín Oficial del Estado han firmado un convenio para la colaboración en la conservación y preservación de los boletines oficiales de ámbito nacional y de interés general. Estas publicaciones electrónicas son objeto de depósito legal. El convenio firmado por estas dos instituciones refuerza las garantías para el acceso y la preservación a largo plazo de estos boletines que, por su condición de publicaciones oficiales, constituyen una relevante manifestación del patrimonio bibliográfico español.

The Effectiveness and Durability of Digital Preservation and Curation Services

The Ithaka team is in the midst of an 18-month research project to examine and assess how digital preservation systems are developed, deployed, and sustained. They have started analyzing the business approaches of community-based and commercial initiatives through a series of eight case studies. The study focuses on business and operational strategies, and will inform a public report. It aims to not only further increase Ithaka’s understanding of sustainability principles, but also contribute to the development of actionable recommendations to help the sector implement the research findings.

ISSN IC collaborates with partners regarding diamond OA journal preservation

On 29 January 2021, the article “Preservation of open access articles – is long-term storage guaranteed?” by Jo Chapman appeared in The Publication Plan. This article mentions the ongoing collaboration between DOAJ, CLOCKSS, Internet Archive, Keepers Registry/ISSN International Centre and Public Knowledge Project (PKP) regarding diamond OA journal preservation.

Celebrating 50 Years of the Southeast Asia Materials Project (1970-2020)

2020 marks a milestone in the half-century of international collaborative accomplishments of SEAM (Southeast Asia Materials Project) under the governance of the Center for Research Libraries. SEAM is a global membership-based consortium of academic institutions interested in supporting Southeast Asian scholarly resources.

Conference on Digital Preservation in Latin America

The Ibero-American Association for Digital Preservation (APREDIG) is a non-profit organisation whose aim is to disseminate the importance of good practices in digital preservation actions, policies and strategies for the management and comprehensive access to long-term digital archives in Ibero-American institutions and organisations.

As part of the global celebrations on November 5, 2020 of the Digital Preservation Day, APREDIG brought together specialists on the subject from Spain, Colombia, Mexico and Brazil, to analyze the challenges that digital preservation will face in 2021, and the trends on the matter for Ibero-America.

Digital preservation community survey results published

The Open Preservation Foundation announces the publication of the findings report and anonymised raw data from the OPF digital preservation community survey. With responses gathered from 98 organisations in 31 countries, the results provide an interesting snapshot of the digital preservation landscape today.
