Europeana Newspapers offers free, open source tools which individual libraries can use to assess refinement quality and metadata standards in relation to their own digital newspaper collections. A dedicated browser with faceted search and full text functionalities has proven popular with researchers selected as a primary target group.

Usus, a new community-led forum for libraries, consortia, publishers and vendors was established in 2014 in order to provide a gathering place for all of these groups to share and discuss usage statistics issues, developments and solutions.

The Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) has announced its participation in OpenAIRE2020, a funded project to develop and maintain the infrastructure to support the European Commission OA policy. This participation aims to work towards international alignment of repository networks, a key priority for COAR.
