Guidelines for OA publishers on implementing the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science

This draft document was prepared by Claire Redhead and Iryna Kuchma to focus on aspects of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science which apply to open access publishers who want to implement the recommendation, and was shared during the OASPA webinar held on 15th March 2022: Policy into Action: the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science under the spotlight – actions for publishing. Community feedback is welcome and the updated draft will be reviewed with UNESCO as a resource to support their work on the wider implementation of the Recommendation.

A look back at the European Open Science Conference now online

The presentations and videos of the OSEC 2022 conference held in Paris on 4 and 5 February 2022, are available from the OSEC 2022 website.

The online conference brought together more than 2,000 participants from five continents. The discussions on how to renovate research assessment were at the heart of these days and were a major step towards building a coalition for research assessment reform under the aegis of the European Commission, after the release of the Paris Call on Research Assessment.

The International Science Council action plan for 2022 – 2024: Science and society in transition

The Council’s second Action Plan will guide the Council’s work until the end of 2024. It builds on ISC activities and achievements to date, reflects the lessons that have been learned in implementing the first Action Plan (2019 – 2021), and responds to the evolving global context within which science operates.

This document presents the Council’s prospective scientific and organizational priorities and related activities for the 2022–2024 period. Two projects are particularly interesting: The future of scientific publishing and Open Science in the global South.

Do Institutional Repository Deposit Guidelines Deter Data Discovery?

The study demonstrates that while data deposit can be accommodated by the existing metadata requirements of multi-purpose IRs, their metadata practices do little to prioritize data deposit or to promote data discovery. Evidence indicates that data discovery will benefit from additional metadata elements.

UNESCO sets international open science standards

Some 193 countries attending UNESCO’s General Conference have agreed to abide by common standards for open science. The first international framework was adopted in the hope of making science more equitable and inclusive, as well as enhancing international scientific cooperation. The Recommendation calls on Member States to set up regional and international funding mechanisms for open science and to ensure that all publicly funded research respect the principles and core values of open science.

Learning lessons from FAIR data implementation

On 20 September 2021, FAIRsFAIR organised the workshop “Learning lessons from FAIR data implementation. Good practices from universities across Europe” during the Open Science Fair 2021. The event offered participants the opportunity to discuss a preliminary analysis of good practices from universities across Europe that are being gathered by the project partners, highlighting the drivers, impact and implementation steps behind initiatives taken by institutions to integrate Research Data Management (RDM) and FAIR data skills in university curricula.

NISO Voting Members Approve Work on Recommended Practice for Retracted Research

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) announced that its proposed work item for a Communication of Retractions, Removals, and Expressions of Concern (CORREC) Recommended Practice has been approved by NISO Voting Members.

Retracted research is published work that is withdrawn, removed, or otherwise invalidated from the scientific and scholarly record. Although relatively rare, retracted research can be inadvertently propagated within the digital scholarly record through citations. The CORREC Recommended Practice is intended to help address this problem, by clearly identifying parties involved in the retraction process, along with their responsibilities, actions, notifications, and the metadata necessary to communicate retracted research.
